Key Points To Building A Home Business Website

long tail keywordsFirstly let me say that I do understand there are different types of businesses but getting your website noticed by the search engines does require certain steps to be taken. And every website developer needs to do this. I could write a book about this subject alone and in our future seminars I will be covering this in detail, but for the moment I will keep it brief.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
When a website is set up it is very important that it is done correctly from the very beginning so that it attracts the search engine crawlers. Earlier in the year Google made changes to their algorithms for ranking websites which affected the majority of websites and their rankings. These changes brought about many discussions regarding the importance of SEO website setup and content.

Technical where to’s and why fore’s are not a specialty of mine so I won’t go down that path, Until I see definitive proof that SEO is no longer important then I believe that we should all work with it, at least to a certain extent.

In saying that, there is absolutely no doubt that content is king. Your website must have quality content which answers the questions that your site seekers are asking. Without quality content you have diddly squat chance of being ranked or found on the web.

Setting Up The Website

Before even looking for a domain name you need to know the keywords that apply to your business. You need to know what your clients are going to be typing in the search boxes. But in saying that you need to not have generic keywords like: “shoes”, but words like “high heeled shoes”.  You can see the difference where “shoes”,  could be runners, sandals or high heels and “high heeled shoes” is much more specific which is what a client would type in.

Therefore that differentiation must be written into your website as much as possible.

Domain Name and URL

Where possible the domain name should be the same as the business name. But this in itself could be a problem in that it is more important for a domain name to have a relevant keyword in it because that is one of the first contacts for the search engines when looking to find the answers to queries typed in their search boxes.

Title Tag

This goes just under the Domain Name that you have given your website and is the second most important title of the website.  It should also contain your main keyword or one of the main keywords.

That covers the website set up but from there you need to carefully optimize the rest of the site and this is another long process as well.

All articles need to have a keyword (the same keyword) in the header, in the first paragraph and in the last paragraph. And again about every 100 words throughout the article.

Use bullet points where possible and try to use other relevant keywords in subheadings where you possibly can.

Keep in mind that you must have quality informational content and the articles must flow.

To again give your site the best possible chance of climbing up the rankings against the billions of websites there are, you need to link within your website from article to article as this helps keep people on your website longer giving them more information and the longer people are on your website Google considers that to mean that you have lots of quality information on your site for your readers.

You will see here in this sentence where I have linked to another article with information about website marketing (notice that I use the name of the page I am sending you to.)

HTML Meta Tags

Tags are used to help browsers find your website. They do not show on the page. Here is an example of what would be at the top of each page in the background.

< head>
< title>Not a Meta Tag, but required anyway < /title>
< meta name=”description” content=”Write Your Description Here”>
< meta http-equiv=”content-type” content=”text/html;charset=UTF-8″>
< /head>

If you use the All In One SEO Plugin on your site you will set it up with:

  • Home title
  • Home description
  • Home keywords

And this will be the tags that you need for your website.

These are the basic SEO skills that you will need and will certainly help getting your website up and ranked.  I do appreciate that there are bloggers who do not mind if they are not ranked because they are writing for fun and amongst their friends their website develops organically and that is great, but those that are seeking rankings do need to follow the SEO tactics mentioned above.
