Painting items is something that is very popular because painting is a skill that not everyone has and those that do not have it appreciate that they have to purchase hand painted items if they want to own them.

There is a wide range of products that can be sold by these home based artists. Hand painted items do tend to be a bit trendy in that the popularity can jump from one item to another depending on the trend at the time.

Items which have proven to be very popular over time are:

Why this type of business suits a mom so much is that the work can be done in stages so interruption to her work is not critical.

Of course, there is the cost of purchasing items to paint on so budgeting needs to be given thought for building up a stock range, especially for a busy season like Christmas where the painter needs to start much earlier in the year to build up stock.

When pricing your home painted products you need to be careful to price them to sell. You may have to bargain a little at times as not all designs may be popular and it might be better to get some money back and paint another item with a popular design rather than hold a stock item for a long time.

One factor that does sometimes get in the way for a crafts person is their emotions when it comes to pricing. Craft and art items are usually painted by people who have sensitive emotions and not only that they see their hard work in the item, sometimes to the detriment of what the item is really worth in the market place.

The speed with which an item sells is often a sign as to whether the pricing is too cheap or too dear. My advice to you would be to carefully watch the speed with which your stock and particular designs are turning over and adjust your price accordingly.

It is always a good idea too, to let customers know that they can order a different size if you do have other sizes available.  Always cover your product cost though as a deposit, or even get the whole price up front.
