How Do Problem Solving Skills Affect Your Business

How Do Problem Solving Skills Affect Your BusinessA skill that one would not necessarily immediately think as critical to a home business is the ‘problem solving skill.’  But when you think about it a home business owner is usually a single operator and therefore decision making falls on their shoulders and their shoulders alone.

Some people can easily and quickly make decisions and act on them immediately, but for others they tend to procrastinate and find making and implementing decisions quite stressful.

Should You Still Go Into Business If You Procrastinate?

YES! if that is what you want to do, of course you should. The difference here though is that if you are a person who has difficulties make decisions you need to set yourself up in such a way that you are not having to make a multitude of decisions daily. You need to have the type of business that is low key on decision making and where you can set up some operating systems and stick to them.

It may mean that you don’t make decisions as quickly as others do but this will not matter most of the time.

Also it would pay you to give serious thought to the type of business that you operate. As mentioned, you would be best with one that can be systemized and one that is not going to change a lot over time.

In saying that, you may have a skill that you are fantastic at and if you give careful thought to the operation of a business that can utilize this skill then there is no decision making reason why you cannot start your own business.

Long Term Business Operation

If you are a procrastinator then, as long as you are aware of it, you can plan ahead and not be forced into making rash decisions that you regret. Along with that, if you do feel forced into making a decision, don’t make that decision until you have had a chance to talk it over with your partner, a friend, a confidant, your accountant (although they are usually a bit conservative), or others in your field of expertise.

There really are few decisions that you need to make immediately.

Marketing Your Business

The same applies for marketing your business. Set yourself up a system and stick to it. Only change it if you feel that it is not working for you, but again this is not a decision you will have to make overnight. Do your research and come up with your answers.

How To Make Decisions

The best way is:

  • to take an A4 piece of paper
  • write the decision to be made at the top of the page as a header
  • then strike a line down the middle and
  • at the top of the page write ‘Advantages’ above one column and ‘Disadvantages’ above the other column
  • then proceed to list down all the things you can think of that this new decision will affect
  • then work out which way you should go with your decision

There are many problems that a home business operator can come up against but with dedication, motivation and a willingness to succeed, most of them can be overcome.

Do you think that procrastination is affecting any part of your business?  Let me know what you are thinking in the comment box below. Would love to hear your thoughts.

  1. I procrastinate when I am overwhelmed – when I have lots to do and no clear plan of action.

When I find myself listening to a webinar or going for a bath with a book when I know I have a mountain to do – I stop and get the old pen and paper out. It’s back to the list thing – start somewhere, prioritise and just get it done!

Yes, I have my advantages and disadvantages columns – it’s a good way to make yourself focus.

    1. Thanks Jan for your insight. I can see what you are saying about being overwhelmed. I get that too when I have not got a clear plan for what I want to achieve. My goal has been to have a clear action plan beside me all the time now and I get so much more done.
