In my blog How To Promote Your Blog Post With A Marketing Plan I mention that email marketing to your database is right up there as one of the most important steps to promoting your blog. So let’s look at some of the questions asked about having a database.
What is your database, exactly? Well, it is a list of people who have logged into something you are offering through an optin box or by purchasing something off your site where they have had to leave their name and contact details first.

Why Have A Database
Simply put, “It is 80% easier to sell to 20% of your past clients” and if you don’t have their names and contact details then you are missing out on a huge amount of income. Not only is it easier, it is much more cost effective because of that fact alone.
Why do you write a blog?
- It is so that you get readers who are interested in your particular topic to come to your site.
- So what are you going to do with them if you do not collect their names and email addresses.
- How are you going to give them information again if they do not visit your site again.
- How are you going to sell them your valuable product or services if you cannot contact them.
These are the reasons that you build a database of clients.
Feeding Information To Your Database
So now that you have started collecting names and contact details you can re-purpose your blog post and send it out to your database and keep them informed or send a teaser paragraph with a link to your blog post and send them back to your blog. That has two effects:
- increasing traffic in your blog
- they see new offers that you may have added to your blog
What Have You Got To Offer Them
As mentioned earlier these people on your database are very valuable. So to make them feel valuable to you it is a good idea to ensure that they get the chance to purchase any offer you may have going or book into any course you may have going, before you actually offer it to the general public.
Say you have written an ebook which you will be putting on your site in the next couple of days. You could write to your list about the ebook and tell them that you are making the offer to them at a cheaper price before it goes public. Now won’t that make them feel special? Yes, it will!
In this case you are contacting before you blog, but in essence it is the same system.
Being able to write to your database is a sure way to build trust and a reliable client base.
